Which Is It?

For those who haven't yet read the latest EPCOT Central blogpost, I'll keep this short so space at the top of the page isn't tied up. But earlier today, Disney announced that George Kalogridis has been named president of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Take a look at the press release. So, is EPCOT indeed an acronym all in upper-case letters? Or is "Epcot" the name of the park? Or doesn't even Disney know anymore? If even Disney is referring to it as EPCOT in official press releases now (which is something that should be lauded and encouraged!), why not just revert to the EPCOT Center name ... or at least officially make it EPCOT, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, which comes with a story, a history and a background and isn't just a made-up nonsense word?

One of the tip boards in Future World refers to EPCOT as well. I saw a picture of it recently; within the past couple of weeks.

This is Reuters. They probably have a better handle on the history of EPCOT than most folks. This doesn't necessarily mean that Mr. Kalogridis would have been faithful to the acronym itself. One can hope though ...

No, it's not Reuters -- it's Reuters picking up a Disney press release issued through PR Newswire. So, it's Disney, not Reuters.

My bad... didn't see "PR News Wire."

Well, that's all the more encouraging.

Thanks for the correction.

I saw it, too. I don't think it means much, but I would love for EPCOT to at least be in caps again.

Hey, I've come back to Central, and I'm feeling pretty awesome about it. New posts, at the same quality they were at before.

Keep it up EC!

I know this is a late comment (eight days later), but on last night's episode of Two and a Half Men, there was a line in the dialogue about EPCOT Center. It's amazing how often the park is referred to as EPCOT Center on TV, including since last year Rachel Ray, The Office, Saturday Night Live and even during the '08 Summer Olympics. Of all the Disney theme parks, I'm sure there are more references on television to EPCOT Center than any park other than Disneyland.

Since The Walt Disney Company is supposed to be a premier marketing company, why doesn't the company go back to the name EPCOT Center, a name still going strong after 15+ years of being changed?
